🐶 I lost my dog (or cat) in Morocco: what should I do urgently?
The complete and urgent guide to maximizing your chances of finding your pet
Every day in Morocco, dozens—sometimes hundreds—of "Lost Dog" and "Lost Cat" posts circulate on Facebook and Instagram. An open window, a gate left ajar, a startling noise, a moment of inattention… and in a matter of seconds, your pet can disappear.
The reality is harsh:
🔸 A dog or cat is not safe in the street
🔸 Cars, motorcycles, stray animals, poisonings, municipal captures…
🔸 Every minute counts
This guide gives you tips, quick actions to take, and above all, preventive measures to avoid this happening one day.
1. React immediately: essential actions
If you have just lost your dog or cat, here is what to do within the hour .
1. Publish a clear and complete post
You can use a template on Canva, but a simple post is sufficient if it contains:
✔️ Clear photos (including a close-up and a full-body shot)
✔️ Your pet's name
✔️ The exact location where he/she was last seen
✔️ The day and the time
✔️ Your phone number
✔️ A reward to motivate replies
Publish first on:
- your personal social networks
- Instagram stories
- dedicated Facebook groups (Pet Alert Morocco, Lost/Found Animals (Morocco), Lost, Found & Stolen Animals in Morocco, etc.)
Ask your friends and family to share this post widely. The goal is simple: to make it go viral.
2. Physically search around the area
The first few hours are crucial.
Print a "LOST ANIMAL" poster
Hang it:
📍 In the neighboring streets
📍 At local shops
📍 At the entrance to the residences
📍 In bakeries, cafes, pharmacies
📍 At nearby veterinary clinics
Then ask:
👮 To the parking attendants
🧹 To the cleaning staff
👨 To building caretakers
👷 To the workers in the area
They see a lot of things and can contact you at any time if you leave them a number .
3. Check the sales platforms
When your pet goes missing, it is unfortunately possible that a malicious person may try to resell it for profit.
In Morocco, several platforms are used for the sale or adoption of animals:
- Avito.ma
- AnimalSouk.ma
- Facebook Marketplace
- Facebook groups for adopting or selling animals
👉 Check these platforms in the first few hours following the disappearance, and several times a day.
👀 If you spot an ad that looks like your pet's:
- Never say that you are the owner.
- Contact the person as if you were an interested buyer .
- Arrange an appointment quickly .
- Arrange a meeting accompanied and, if possible, with the authorities (local police or "moqadem") carrying your pet's vaccination record .
- Do not give out any sensitive information before verifying that it is indeed your dog or cat.
This method greatly increases your chances of finding him safely.
⚠️ Beware of scam attempts
Some people may claim to have found your pet… when they have never seen it.
To avoid the pitfalls:
- Always ask for a detailed description before giving any information.
- If the person is unable to name at least one physical or behavioral characteristic other than those mentioned in your ads, be wary.
- Never send money to someone who asks for a reward before the animal is returned.
- Be wary of anonymous profiles (fake Facebook accounts, unknown numbers).
4. Check the impound lot immediately
In Morocco, stray dogs are collected daily by delegated companies (such as Casa Baia , etc.).
⚠️ Deadlines are short.
⚠️ Animals identified as “stray” may be euthanized.
Without wanting to dramatize, we must tell the truth:
👉 The risk exists and speed is your best ally.
Go to your city's impound lot within the first 12 hours .
5. Preventive measures to avoid your pet disappearing one day
Because prevention saves lives.
1. Have your pet microchipped at a veterinarian's office
This is the first official protection.
📌 The electronic chip enables:
- to identify the owner
- to prove that the animal belongs to you
- to facilitate returns if someone finds it
- to prevent it from being stolen or used for commercial mating
2. Use an engraved identification tag
🪪 Simple, effective, economical.
To be registered:
- pet name
- your number
- possibly your neighborhood or address
This is the most immediate system for a neighbor to call you.
3. Use a GPS tracker for dogs or cats
📍 The AirTag GPS (Apple) is currently the most reliable solution worldwide because:
✔️ It works thanks to the thousands (or millions) of iPhones in big cities
✔️ Live location via the Find My app
✔️ No subscription
✔️ 1 battery = 1 year
✔️ Lightweight, discreet, ideal for small pets
